Beyond The Schema: Why Flawless Infrastructure Won't Save Bad AEO Strategy
Guest commentary on MediaPost

A recent Marketing Insider piece compared answer engine optimization (AEO) to real estate: you can't sell a house with leaky plumbing, and you can't win at AEO if your website's technical infrastructure is broken.
That comparison holds, but only up to a point. A site can have pristine architecture — llms.txt files, schema markup, perfect crawl depths — and still fail if the content is hollow and generic. Fixing infrastructure is necessary, but it is not sufficient.
AI answer engines like Gemini, Perplexity, and ChatGPT have changed the game from keyword matching to context mapping. They crawl for deep relevance and deliver answers that look more like a human B2B referral than a list of links. That means the test for AI visibility is not whether your schema validates; it's whether your content shows up in the peer-to-peer dialogue LLMs pull from.
In this guest commentary for MediaPost, I break down what it actually takes to win in the AEO era: building competitive comparison pages, optimizing for direct questions, doubling down on third-party listicles, dominating peer platforms like Reddit and Quora, and shifting budget toward evidence-based actions that feed the pipeline.
